Steamie House: old wood, new decor…

After our class at The Makery– I saw some neat posts on instagram from another craftsman in the community space. I sent him a message about possibly making a reclaimed wood infil panel for our fireplace.

We visited his workspace, to scope out the materials he’s picked up around town, and here’s the final piece- we LOVE it. Love hearing about where the wood came from, especially since some of it is from orange, (especially since Steve is also sourced  from Orange! haha.)

Steamie Crafts: Weaving

As a make-up mothers day gift to ourselves- my mom and I attended a weaving class at the really neat space- The Makery. Located in the Community space- it’s a really neat little collection of shops/workshops, and obviously flamenco dancing too.

We arrived to little DIY looms waiting for us, and loads of yarn options.

After a couple hours- we each had our own creation to take home! I’m looking forward to future classes there, and to making more weavings on my own at home!

Steami-ized Gift Tags- DIY

Requiring no actual “crafting” this DIY, is more of an “OIY” (order it yourself)… but here’s how we arrived at our cute little personalized gift tags:

IMG_2312Since the other half of this “Team Steamie” was kind enough to cave to me pestering and get a holiday card photos shoot this year [pictures here]… I just couldn’t leave well enough alone at using the photos just for the cards.

Must. Maximize. Cuteness.

While I was checking out online cards, I noticed templates for simple, square business cards. The light bulb clicked on, and I ordered a set of 50 cards with a simple image from our photo shoot (Gotta love E’s sparkly shoes!). Yes, I had a coupon code… yes, I’m a sucker for square format anything.

With just a simple hole punch- voila- personalized gift tags.

I really think they added a lovely touch to this years wrapping. I didn’t buy ANY wrapping supplies this year, just used up what was left over in the archives (aka- the wrapping paper box under our bed). I envy those out there with a full room dedicated to creating magical packages to sit under the tree… but I’m happy with our sparkly yarn & adorable feet adorning gifts for our loved ones!

Ho. Ho. Ho.

i heart blogshop

SO as a little treat to myself- I attended this weekends Blogshop LA.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, since I do already know how to use photoshop (at least for my purposes at work, or crafting), and I don’t really “BLOG” why on earth would I take this class?  But something about it kept calling me, can’t look at all those instagram posts & not get lured in I guess. Last year, before we sold our condo,- I told Steve, if it sells, I’m treating myself to Blogshop!  Well… thankfully the condo sold, but Blogshop kept selling out before I could sign up!

Finally I was able to snag a spot.  I was getting nervous this week, sort of second guessing my decision, but come Saturday all fears were alleviated- as the class was informative, fun, and extremely well run!  LOVED the preloaded thumb drives, all the example tasks, and the personal attention.   Bri & Angela made us all feel welcome, and the helpers quickly jumped in to answer any questions.   And lets not forget the goody bags.

It was a weekend full of photoshop tutorials, with dabbles in graphic design and blogging tips.  All of which seemed useful and applicable to blogging, obviously, but also to any graphic/media communication.

Having used Photoshop for years (with NO training) I could usually create the final images I wanted, but I for sure was using the LONG way. I’ve now learned much faster techniques, and several completely new to me, and total “Ah-Ha” tips.  All in all, a very excellent course, and I can’t wait to put the skills to work.  Be it at work, or at home.

I wanted to post some items I made. This is NOT everything we made, but while it was still fresh I wanted to get some goodies up. Hopefully I’ll keep all the skills learned today and push forward and develop more! I mean seriously- I’m so fired up. I keep looking at all the images I see, thinking about how I could edit/embellish!

Also- Rule one was about keeping all images the same width…  I’m already FAILING- since I can’t tell how to control that yet on here… I will make an effort to fix that (for the next post… I’m already done with this one!  haha)

Teeny Steamie’s Room

With our little Teeny Steamie on well on her way, we had to get moving on prepping her room! SO excited to create a warm, fun space to welcome our little bundle to her home!

We relocated the book shelves out of the office… next up was to primer over the red walls.  (See red to grey here)

Bye bye Man Cave/Office- hello light & bright baby room! Some progress pics- Steve worked hard on that primer. But we called in a pro to finish the job once we were both worn out & it still needed covering!

Up went the curtains- and then I began work on the triangles!

The triangles were inspired by these decals... but I had a slightly different color scheme in mind, and with our NOT quite a square room- the proportions of the decals didn’t quite work.  So, I opted instead to paint the wall myself! It took many, many rounds of taping and painting- and the final result is SO happy!

Taping & color coding each spot:

And while it took a while to arrive, the crib is finally here (still waiting on the dresser)-  Danny & Steve set it all set up for our little miss! Once the crib was in the elephant mobile promptly was hung as well.

I inherited this chair from my grandpa- and it’s been roaming with me from apartment to apartment- to finally our home. After many years in that lovely burnt orange/brown- for it’snew life in the nursery- I ordered this fabric, and worked with a local upholsterer to refresh the chair & ottoman. I’m SUPER in love with how it came out, and happy that it’s just as comfy- a perfect chair for nursing, napping, and hopefully future spot to read many many bedtime stories!

A quick trip to Ikea, and a not to quick attempt at assembling (the shelve may have sat half assembled for several days on our living room floor) I couldnt’ bend well to finish it- but once Steve stepped in to help it went together easily & we placed it in the corner & loaded with all the wonderful books & toy’s we received at the shower.

The nursery is coming together- now we just need the little lady to go in it!

(edit: after Steve’s office shower- I had to hang up the cute welcome banner they made! )

Steamie does January 2013 (Recapping the month mostly with pictures!)

Steve did some craigslisting (which I think was just an excuse to play with these star wars figurines)

I started really rounding out that baby bump!

Somehow this picture of David Hasselhoff, autographed to Steve showed up- and it now on display on our fridge

A few toys & Books for Baby (NOTE the puffer fish WILL NOT go in the nursery)

A crafternoon paper craft- circles turn into scallops- turn into wall art for above the piano!

Chair Update…

See we upholstered these chairs here… and NOW it was time to update the frames of the chairs.

We painted them a light grey, with a tiny orange accent. They’re perfect for extra seats at the dining table, or around the house when we have company.
